Indian River Lagoon Coastal Cleanup

In Celebration of International Coastal Cleanup Day, Brevard County, Florida, communities rallied together to collect and document the trash littering coastlines, identifying the sources of debris and changing behaviors.

No matter where you live—whether on the coast or thousands of miles away—all waterways lead to the ocean. If we take action and work together, we can improve the lagoon’s health and make trash-free seas a reality.

On September 20, 2025, the Indian River Lagoon Coastal Cleanup event brought together volunteers passionate about improving the health and beauty of the Indian River Lagoon. Hosted by GreenSpace Water Alliance, in collaboration with various community organizations and sponsors, to celebrate a global initiative to reduce marine pollution.

Volunteer Impact

Hundreds of dedicated volunteers came out to tackle the pollution along the Lagoon’s shoreline. Armed with gloves, trash bags, lots of smiles, and a commitment to environmental stewardship, the volunteers collectively cleaned 25 miles of shoreline, significantly reducing waste that would otherwise wind up in the Lagoon.

Collection Results

The collective efforts of the participants led to the removal of 3,013 pounds of trash from the shorelines of the Indian River Lagoon. Among the top items collected were:

  • 3,757 plastic pieces

  • 2,926 food wrappers

  • 2,737 cigarette butts

  • 2,449 construction materials

  • 1,585 tiny foam pieces

  • 1,351 plastic beverage bottles

  • 1,025 beverage cans

  • 841 plastic bottle caps

  • 788 ft fishing line

  • 676 plastic grocery bags

These staggering numbers demonstrate the importance of continued cleanup efforts to combat pollution and protect the Lagoon’s ecosystem.

Education & Awareness

Beyond trash collection, the Lagoon Coastal Cleanup is an educational experience. Participants learn about the environmental threats of plastic waste, discarded fishing line, and other pollutants. The event reinforces the idea that every individual can make a significant impact to improve our waterways.

Are you ready to engage? We dare you to become a contributor to the cause. With your help, we will enhance our natural water resources and green spaces through community engagement, education, sustainable practices, and innovative solutions.

Looking Ahead

As we reflect on the success of last year's event, it’s clear that community engagement and education are vital for improving the health of the Indian River Lagoon for future generations. The GreenSpace Water Alliance encourages everyone to stay involved year-round through various environmental initiatives and looks forward to seeing even more participation in future cleanups.
