April 26, 2025, In celebration of Earth Day, 220 GWA volunteers removed 2,114 pounds of trash and debris from 23 miles of Indian River Lagoon shorelines. Thank you to the many sponsors and contributing partners for making this impactful event possible!

Environmental Impact

Removing over one ton of trash directly improves water quality and habitat health for hundreds of species, including endangered ones like manatees.

Debris removal prevents plastics and other pollutants from breaking down into harmful microplastics or leaching toxins into the waterways.

This effort is vital for wildlife safety, reducing the risk of entanglement and ingestion by fish, birds, and marine mammals.

Data & Advocacy.

This cleanup is unique because we tabulate and collect actionable data. The volume and type of trash collected can inform local policy and prevention efforts (e.g., banning balloon releases or improving stormwater management practices).

Community Engagement

Mobilizing 220 volunteers fosters a sense of stewardship, educates the public, and builds momentum for continued environmental action.

This community awareness event demonstrates to local leaders and residents that the community values the Indian River Lagoon and is committed to protecting it.
